He was born as James Paul McCartney in Liverpool, England. Paul was one of the 4 members of the Beatles but after they disbanded in 1969 / 1970 he fell into depression, helped out by his then wife Linda who praised his songwriting. In 1970 he released his first solo album "McCartney' which topped the US album charts. In 1971 he collaborated with Linda and drummer Deion Seiwell for his next album "Ram". It peaked at #1 in the UK and #2 in the USA. Later that year the former Moody Blues guitarrist Denny Laine joined to form the group 'Wings'. With this formation McCartney released 7 albums. While the group added or released members the 3 that always stood together were Paul and Linda McCartney and Laine. Two of the albums reached #1 in the UK: "Band On The Run" in 1973 and "Venus And Mars" in 1975. Those two both topped the US Billboard album charts in addition to "Red Rose Speedway" in 1973 and "Wings at the Speed of Sound" in 1976.
In 1980 McCartney released his next album "McCartney II" which also peaked at #1 in the UK. His band 'Wings' disbanded in 1981 and Paul continued to make music as a solo artist. In 1982 he released his next album "Tug Of War" which reached #1 in the UK and the USA but also in Germany and Japan among other places. McCartney started to work together with artists like Stevie Wonder (ths duet 'Ebony and Ivory' became his 28th #1 single in the USA - a record) and Michael Jackson and released his next album "Pipes Of Peace" in 1983. After the release of a soundtrack album called "Give Me Regards to Broad Street" in 1984 (another charttopper in the UK), he took a break and released his next album in 1986. It was called "Press To Play" but failed to reach the peak of his former albums.
In 1989 he released his next album "Flowers In The Dirt" - it peaked at #1 in the UK, and was certified platinum there. It took more than 30 years until he returned to the top of the charts with 'McCartney III' which was released in 2020, while the album released in 2018 called "Egypt Station" helped him back atop the US Top 200 album charts.
