"Something" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1969 album Abbey Road. It was written by George Harrison, the band's lead guitarist. Together with his second contribution to Abbey Road, "Here Comes the Sun", it is widely viewed by music historians as having marked Harrison's ascendancy as a composer to the level of the Beatles' principal songwriters, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Two weeks after the album's release, the song was issued on a double A-side single, coupled with "Come Together", making it the first Harrison composition to become a Beatles A-side. The pairing was also the first time in the United Kingdom that the Beatles issued a single containing tracks already available on an album. While the single's commercial performance was lessened by this, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States as well as charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and West Germany, and peaked at number 4 in the UK.


The track is generally considered a love song to Pattie Boyd, Harrison's first wife, although Harrison offered alternative sources of inspiration in later interviews. Owing to the difficulty he faced in getting more than two of his compositions onto each Beatles album, Harrison first offered the song to Joe Cocker. As recorded by the Beatles, the track features a guitar solo that several music critics identify among Harrison's finest playing. The song also drew praise from the other Beatles and their producer, George Martin, with Lennon stating that it was the best song on Abbey Road. The promotional film for the single combined footage of each of the Beatles with his respective wife, reflecting the estrangement in the band during the months preceding their break-up in April 1970. Harrison subsequently performed the song at his Concert for Bangladesh shows in 1971 and throughout the two tours he made as a solo artist.


"Something" received the Ivor Novello Award for the "Best Song Musically and Lyrically" of 1969. By the late 1970s, it had been covered by over 150 artists, making it the second-most covered Beatles composition after "Yesterday". Shirley Bassey had a top-five UK hit with her 1970 recording, and Frank Sinatra regularly performed the song. Other artists who have covered it include Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, James Brown, Smokey Robinson and Johnny Rodriguez. In 1999, Broadcast Music Incorporated named "Something" as the 17th-most performed song of the twentieth century, with 5 million performances. In 2000, Mojo ranked "Something" at number 14 in the magazine's list of "The 100 Greatest Songs of All Time"; it was ranked 110th on Rolling Stone's 2021 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". In 2002, a year after Harrison's death, McCartney and Eric Clapton performed it at the Concert for George tribute at London's Royal Albert Hall.


Abbey Road 앨범 수록. 1969년 9월 26일에 앨범으로 발매되었고, 영국에서는 1969년 10월 6일, 미국에서는 1969년 10월 31일에 싱글로 발매되었다. Come Together과 함께 더블 A 싱글로 발매, 빌보드에서는 한 주 간 1위, 캐나다에서는 4주 간 1위, 영국에서는 5위를 차지하였다. 이때까지 비틀즈의 A 사이드 싱글은 레논-매카트니 콤비에 의한 것이었으나 최초로 조지 해리슨이 작사 작곡한 곡이 A 사이드로 올라왔다. 비틀즈의 곡 중 앨범 발매 이후 나온 싱글 중 최초이다. 이전까지의 싱글들은 앨범 발표 전에 나오거나 앨범에 수록되지 않았다.


존 레논은 Abbey Road 앨범 내에서 최고의 곡, 폴 매카트니는 조지 해리슨이 쓴 곡 중 제일이라 칭찬했고, 프랭크 시나트라도 지난 50년 중 최고의 사랑 노래(Love Song)이라며 극찬했다. '가장 아름다운 레논-매카트니 발라드'라는 말도 곁들여서. 150 명 이상의 가수들이 커버했으며, 이는 비틀즈의 곡 중 Yesterday 다음으로 커버가 많이 된 곡이다.


1968년 화이트 앨범 세션 당시 처음 쓰기 시작했다고 한다. 조지 해리슨 본인의 말을 빌리자면 "폴이 작업하는 동안 혼자 빈 스튜디오에 가서 작곡"했다고 한다. 곡을 완성할 즈음에는 화이트 앨범에 대한 구상이 끝나서 여기에 싣지는 못했다고. 이때의 데모 버전은 Anthology 3에 수록되었다.
많은 사람들이 이 곡에 대한 영감을 그 당시 그의 아내 패티 보이드에게서 영감을 얻었다 생각한다. 당시 아내를 에릭 클랩튼에 빼앗길 뻔한것을 보면 아내를 붙잡으려는 곡이 아닌가 하는 생각이 지배적이다. 패티 보이드도 2007년 자서전에서 그렇게 주장했다. 그러나 1996년 인터뷰를 보면 조금 다른 이야기가 나온다.
아닙니다, 저는 그녀에 대해서 쓴 것이 아니에요. 저는 그냥 썼고, 나중에 누가 비디오에다 짜집기해놓은겁니다. 그들이 했던 것은 저와 패티, 폴과 린다, 링고와 모린, 당시에는 그랬었죠, 존과 요코의 사진을 가져다가 그거로 짧은 비디오를 만든 것 뿐입니다. 그러자 모든 사람들이 제가 패티에 관해 곡을 썼다고 억측했습니다만, 사실, 그 곡을 쓸 때엔, 레이 찰스에 대해 생각하고 있었습니다.

하여튼 이 곡은 애비로드 세션에서 녹음되었고 52테이크까지 진행되었다. 이때 존 레논의 피아노 솔로가 수록되어 8분 가량이었지만 발매 될 때엔 잘려서 나왔다.
