Apparently as kids John Lennon and Paul McCartney really DID spend lots of time hanging out at the roundabout at Penny Lane, waiting for bus changes. And there really IS a barber shop and a fire station. Not sure about the “pretty nurse selling poppies from a tray” though -- that feels to me like a bit of psychedelia sneaking into this happy/mundane slice of life.
A couple new things I learned. First, this was released in 1967 on the flip side of Strawberry Fields. From the artyness of it I had kind of figured it was a John thing, but turns out Paul wrote it.
I like how this tune gives Luke space for being playful and creative with his percussive choices.
