Paul McCartney turns 80 today, and to celebrate the event, we’re looking back at the time this pop Royalty has spent with the Royal Family.
The Royal Variety Show in 1963 kicked off a decades-long relationship, as the Beatles met the Queen Mother. Only three years later, the Beatles received MBEs the Queen Elizabeth the second.
In 1996, McCartney invited the Queen to his home city - Liverpool - to formally open his performing arts school.
During this visit the Beatle refused to speak about the possibility of his knighthood. But, the highest accolade came just one year later.
It was 2002 when the singer songwriter performed the shortest Beatles number on record - Her Majesty - to the Queen at her Golden Jubilee Party At The Palace, in the grounds of Buckingham Palace.
Later that year, the Queen visited Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery to view McCartney’s exhibition of paintings.
Finally, 21 years after he was knighted, this Beatle was made a Companion Of Honour at Buckingham Palace for, what the Royal Family called, "his lasting contribution to music in the UK and worldwide".
