PAUL MCCARTNEY
Venue: Live at the Montreal Forum
City: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Date: December 9th, 1989
Welcome to yet another classic Macca show! This is Paul's return to Montreal after last having played there all the way back in 1964 with The Beatles.
Source 1 is overall in pretty good quality, but the tape is riddled with clicks, cuts, and drop-outs all around, so I had to patch all of those issues with the second source, which is also pretty decent but a bit distant. A couple songs from tonight's show were also used in the 'Get Back' concert film, so I've merged those in, overall tonight's concert is a fun listening experience despite the aforementioned issues.
Paul is quite decent tonight, while not great, it's definitely one of his better nights of the tour, though he weakens in the second half, and the band delivers a really fun show with some great highlights and some excellent musicianship to be heard tonight, the atmosphere at the Forum is also pretty incredible, with audience members close to the taper cheering, singing along (even with the new songs), and clapping along. Taking note of the French-speaking province he's playing in, Paul makes sure to add some French to his speeches tonight.
'Figure of Eight' is a decent opener with a great final chorus, with Paul taking it a bit easier on the verses when compared to Rosemont or even Toronto, he does go all out on the final chorus though, and Hamish adds some fun ad-libs throughout. 'Jet' has Paul getting the verse A4s decently, but still being quite rough overall, 'Rough Ride' is a tight one, with some fun ad-libs by Paulie, Chris also adds some great drum fills tonight. 'Got To Get You Into My Life' gets a fantastic sing-along by the audience as it's the first Beatle song of the evening, and Paul sings it solidly aside from a cracked sustain, 'Band On The Run' isn't too smooth as Paul begins to sound a bit rougher and some of the higher notes aren't as clean. 'Ebony and Ivory' has solid vocals from Paul and Hamish. 'We Got Married' has Paul actually not dying in the G4, and the outro has some fantastic keys from Wix. 'Maybe I'm Amazed' has the usual rough choruses with some very strained B4 attempts, and Paul's voice outright not working on the second chorus, the rest of the piano set goes as usual, with 'The Fool On The Hill' being used in the concert film. 'Sgt. Pepper's' sounds strained from Paul but the guitars are fantastic. 'Can't Buy Me Love' is a fun one, the acoustic set is quite solid, with a great 'Things We Said Today' solo. The new songs get a nice reception, and some fun oldies follow, with 'Twenty Flight Rock' having some great musicianship, with Wix going off fantastically throughout, a fun 'Coming Up' and a great 'Let It Be' which got partially used on the concert film follow, with Robbie doing a great solo in the latter. 'Ain't That A Shame' has some excellent guitars and a fun vocal delivery, a decent 'Live and Let Die', and a super atmospheric (thought the audience gets a bit lost at times) 'Hey Jude' end off the main set with great energy and some great audience stuff. The encores are solid, with a great '"Get Back" and a fantastic The End' guitar duel.
