This is the first of two dates at the Playhouse Theatre in London played in front of a small audience (mainly consisting of EMI and MPL employees, plus some few lucky fan club members) with the purpose of doing a public rehearsal of Paul McCartney's 1989-1990 world tour, which would kick off two months later. After not having toured for a decade, Paul decided it was time to get "back on track", and with the idea of promoting his new album, Flowers In The Dirt, he was joined (again) by his wife Linda, guitarists Hamish Stuart and Robbie Macintosh, keyboardist Paul "Wix" Wickens and drummer Chris Whitten.
According to a review on the Beatles Monthly Magazine (September '89 edition), tonight's show, while it had some small technical errors, specially with the lights, the show's a great one, with lots of smiles and great chemistry between the band members, and this review also writes about the semi-informal vibe, with Paul remarking "so if you see any mistakes, don't!". He also apparently kicked over his drink while singing Figure of Eight, so an assistant had to mop up while Paul carried on singing. This is definitely one of the best performances of the year as Paul gives a pretty strong performance, he's not at 100% but he definitely sounds better than he did on the upcoming world tour, due to him not over forcing his voice, it's clear the rehearsals paid off as the band sounds quite tight and don't make many mistakes. Highlights include: Figure Of Eight, Summertime, Twenty Flight Rock and Coming Up.
Huge thanks to Atlasstar for supplying this recording.
