Headline: Paul McCartney showcases his occasionally #jazz adjacent vibes in a song about the rubbish we throw away in today's (1970) disposable culture!
The song was reportedly written in India and originally considered for #AbbeyRoad and the #WhiteAlbum but perhaps it was just a little too esoteric for the band.
There are several things I love about this song, despite it seeming to be on the verge of being one of Paul's more divisive songs (see my second #VersusVerses #podcast for more information). But the chord structure - so simple - has such a jazzy, fluid sound, and in part that's actually due to the time signature (3/4). Lyrically, it's annoying; that's fairly characteristic of some of Paul's curios, but at least the words are enjoyable to sing, being quite poetic in nature. The question really there is: where does poetry and lyricism meet?
By the chorus, the personification of the abandoned things in the song underlines Paul's central message: why do we throw things away so readily? Why not make do and mend?
No matter your opinions on Paul's concepts and content, it's undeniably an addictively catchy melody. I hope you enjoy it.
