Written August 12, 1960, the is letter is Paul's timely response to a mystery drummer who had responded to an ad which The Beatles ran August 8, 1960 in ECHO and was headlined “Drummer – Young – Free." Paul wrote this on August 12, 1960, just 3 days before The Beatles, including Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe, embarked for Hamburg and began a yearlong run that launched the mania. The letter was sold at auction in 2011.
Kurt Henricks analyzes the handwriting and the letter to detail the way what we see on the paper reflects McCartney's thought process and state of mind from a single letter written on the launch pad of an epic musical career that continues to this day.
