Cynthia Lennon mentioned that Paul McCartney "could only aspire" to be as "cool" as John Lennon

In her book John, Cynthia explained that Paul’s methodical and serious approach—such as writing down lyrics in a notebook—was in stark contrast to John’s more carefree attitude. She described Paul as punctual and well-groomed, a perfectionist who even made sure his ears were clean, while John often showed up late, looking disheveled. Paul was fascinated by John’s relaxed style and tried to emulate it.

Cynthia wrote that Paul made a strong effort to impress John, acting confident and trying to appear "cool," because John was the leader of the band and had the final say on who could join and what they played. However, according to Cynthia, Paul never quite managed to pull off John’s effortless coolness. She remembered how, at the time, Paul aspired to be like John, who was laid-back, confident, and in control.

Although Lennon was the founder of The Beatles, some early fans believed McCartney was the band’s most important member. McCartney was ambitious and had the most musical experience. In Paul McCartney: The Life by Philip Norman, Liverpool guitarist Brian Griffiths commented that Paul held the band together, especially when John wasn’t a great singer, George Harrison was shy, Stu Sutcliffe was still learning bass, and Pete Best had just joined as the drummer. McCartney's knowledge of musical theory helped push the band to develop and record new material.
