Cynthia Lennon claimed that Paul McCartney was one of the few people John Lennon truly trusted

Their relationship started with a shared love of music, but they soon discovered they had much more in common. Over time, their musical connection deepened, as did their trust in one another.

Cynthia explained that while Lennon had many acquaintances, there were only a few people he truly loved and trusted. McCartney became one of these confidants. “Paul was one of the three people John was closest to,” she wrote in her book John. “Though he had many friends, he only really let his guard down around Paul, me, and Stuart Sutcliffe.” Cynthia also shared that before McCartney and Lennon became such close friends, Paul initially tried to emulate his older bandmate.

“At that time, Paul worked hard to impress John, strutting and posing with slicked-back hair to appear cool, because John was very much the leader,” she explained. “It was his band, and he made the final decisions—who got in, what songs were played. John was everything Paul wanted to be: confident, laid-back, and in control. Paul could only aspire to those qualities while still in school.” But as their friendship grew stronger, their dynamic shifted. “John began to appreciate Paul’s musical talent and felt he could learn from him. Paul, in turn, grew more confident, and they started sharing responsibilities, eventually running the band together,” she wrote.

Cynthia believed that Lennon was the more natural leader of the two but also felt that Lennon wouldn't have reached the same level of success without McCartney’s drive. She noted that while McCartney had the determination needed for success, Lennon lacked it on his own.
