Bonnaroo, one of the premier U. S. music festivals, has been canceled for the second year in a row, about 48 hours before it was scheduled to begin. The festival was to open Thursday and run through Sunday. Bonnaroo takes place on a Manchester, Tenn. farm about 90 minutes from Huntsville, Alabama’s largest city,In a series of statements released on social media, Bonnaroo organizers indicated recent heavy rains left the festival grounds “waterlogged in many areas” and “campgrounds are flooded to the point that we are unable to drive in or park vehicles safely. ” (The complete statements can be found at the end of this story. )Headlining acts were to include rock band Foo Fighters, rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Lizzo, noir-pop singer Lana Del Rey and hip-hop producer/MC Tyler, the Creator. All told, more than 100 artists would’ve performed at the festival, across 10 stages. Alabama artists scheduled to perform included rock/soul dynamo Brittany Howard (Athens), Americana star Jason Isbell (Green Hill/Shoals), rapper Flo Milli (Mobile) and indie songsmith Waxahatchee (Birmingham). On Aug. 10, it was announced attendees of this year’s festival would be required to have proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative COVID test to enter the fest. Organizers of Bonnaroo, a Creole slang term for “good stuff, ” include concert promotions power Live Nation. In 2020, Bonnaroo was rescheduled and ultimately canceled due to the pandemic. The Bonnaroo Music & Artist Festival debuted in 2002. Around 100, 000 fans attended the last Bonnaroo to occur, in 2019, according to the Nashville Tennessean. Past headliners include Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Radiohead and Metallica. Here’s Bonnaroo’s complete statement announcing the 2021 cancelation:“We are absolutely heartbroken to announce that we must cancel Bonnaroo. While this weekend’s weather looks outstanding, currently Centeroo is waterlogged in many areas, the ground is incredibly saturated on our tollbooth paths, and the campgrounds are flooded to the point that we are unable to drive in or park vehicles safely.“We have done everything in our power to try to keep the show moving forward, but Mother Nature has dealt us a tremendous amount of rain over the past 24 hours, and we have run out of options to try to make the event happen safely and in a way that lives up to the Bonnaroo experience.“Please find ways to safely gather with your Bonnaroo community and continue to radiate positivity during this disappointing time. WE WILL SEE YOU ON THE FARM IN JUNE 2022! All tickets purchased through Front Gate Tickets will be refunded in as little as 30 days to the original method of payment. ”Is tipping at gigs or buying merch the best way to support local musicians?
