The videos keep on coming! Have you had enough yet, or should I keep going?
Just kidding. I'm gonna keep going.
This is such a PACKED song! There's so much going on. Rhythm stabs from John, a jaunty acoustic rhythm guitar on the J-160E (probably George), Paul on a lightning fast bass part AND playing some hella quirky lead fills. It's so much packed into 2 minutes, all of it great.
I studied those rhythm stabs closely by slowing down the isolated track, which allowed me to hear the actual chords. I added reverb in mixing, and man, that's the sound!
And how could I neglect to mention that GORGEOUS 1965 Epiphone Casino? Once again, major note of appreciation to Perry Stanley for lending out his favorite guitar. I don't think I quite captured Paul's tone exactly, but it's very close. I absolutely hear pickup switching, as there are 2 distinct guitar tones playing those fills throughout the song. I put QUITE a lot of effort into studying those riffs, and I'm more than a little proud of the result.
Also...Ringo is playing doubles on the bass drum throughout the song, but alas, I'm no Ringo! I had to simplify to single hits on the bass drum. Forgive me.
Trivia:
- Recorded originally on February 15, 1965 in one take (same session as "Ticket to Ride" and "I Need You"), although George originally attempted 10 edit pieces on guitar, with Paul attempting his own pass the next day.
- Those McCartney lead fills are strikingly similar to the outro fills on "Ticket To Ride," which makes sense since they were recorded on consecutive days.
- From Wikipedia: "The song was performed live for the first time by a Beatle when Paul McCartney returned to the Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, on 28 April 2015; this was 49 years after the Beatles had first played at the venue, in June and July 1966. In a released statement, McCartney said, "It was sensational and quite emotional remembering the first time and then experiencing this fantastic audience tonight." Here's a video of that performance: https://youtu.be/ac2eeFdkvLU.
- Favorite YouTube cover - one of my followers, Levi Gornish! https://youtu.be/V05e1EGYCS8. Very nice cameo by the best Paul in the tribute business, Ardy Sarraf.
