Carl Perkins: Blue Suede Shoes, That's Alright Mama

Paul McCartney claimed that "if there were no CARL PERKINS, there would be no Beatles!" In 1955 at the Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee, Perkins wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" after seeing a dancer get angry with his date for scuffing up his shoes On January 1 1956, "Blue Suede Shoes" reached number 1 on Billboard Country Music chart and number 2 on the Billboard pop music chart. On January 10, 1956, Elvis Presley made his first 8 recordings for RCA in Nashville, including Heartbreak Hotel and Blue Suede Shoes. Perkins's songs were recorded by artists and friends including Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny Cash. In 1964, Perkins toured Britain with Chuck Berry backed by the Animals. "Daddy Sang Bass" was a 1968 single written by Perkins, with lines from the chorus of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" a #1 record for Johnny Cash. In October 1985 George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, Rosanne Cash and Ringo Starr appeared with Perkins on stage for a TV special, Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session, taped live in London. Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash performed gospel, country and rhythm-and-blues songs while a tape rolled at a casual Sun Records session called the Million Dollar Quartet released in 1990. Perkins last album, Go Cat Go!, in 1996, featured Perkins singing duets with Bono, Johnny Cash, John Fogerty, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Paul Simon, and Ringo Starr Called "the King of Rockabilly", Perkins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
